The New York Public Library opened its doors on May 23rd, 1911. At the time, it boasted one million books, 50,000 visitors per day and over 4 acres of marble.
It was the largest marble-clad structure in the United States. The delicate grained marble was mined from the Norcross-West Quarry in Dorset, Vermont (now coined, “The Dorset Quarry”) the nations oldest commercial quarry.
When in Vermont, a trip to the Dorsey Quarry is a must see and must do. Over 120 yards long and 30 yards across, the local swimming hole is filled with incandescent blue-green water, and a favorite spot for summertime dips.
